Job Purpose:
The Packhouse Manager is responsible for overseeing the efficient and effective operation and management of the production team within our fresh produce distribution centre. This role involves managing a large team of 70-100 staff, including supervisors and 5-7 team leaders, to ensure timely and accurate fulfilment of packaging orders while maintaining high standards of quality and safety.
The Packhouse Manager will also be responsible for machinery maintenance, compliance with health and safety regulations, and collaboration with various departments including Quality Assurance, Finance, Goods In, Commercial, Transport, and HR. The successful candidate will play a critical role in recruitment and HR compliance, particularly during peak seasons, and will actively participate in health and safety initiatives. Reporting directly to the Operations Manager, the Packhouse Manager is essential in driving operational excellence and supporting the overall success of the company.
Key Responsibilities
Packhouse Operations Management:
· Oversee and manage the daily operations of the packhouse, ensuring timely and accurate completion of packaging orders.
· Coordinate and supervise the packing team, ensuring efficient workflow and high productivity.
· Implement and maintain best practices in packing operations to optimize efficiency and minimize waste.
· Lead weekly meetings to review production plan and provide short and medium terms plans in line with company strategies.
· Manage Team leaders and performance on a regular basis.
· Ensure skills gap analysis followed by training plans to address gaps.
· Ensure that packhouse standards are achieved in line with procedures and that the site is always audit ready.
· Work with project teams to review performance and assist with planning for future growth.
Machinery Maintenance:
· Ensure all packing machinery is in good working condition, performing routine maintenance and repairs as needed.
· Troubleshoot and resolve any mechanical issues promptly to minimize downtime.
Quality Control:
· Ensure all products are packed according to quality standards and customer specifications.
· Conduct regular quality checks and implement corrective actions as necessary.
· Work closely with the Quality Assurance department to maintain high standards.
Safety and Compliance:
· Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations within the packhouse.
· Conduct regular safety audits and training sessions for the packing team.
· Actively participate in the Health & Safety Committee and initiatives.
Inventory Management:
· Monitor, order and manage packaging materials to ensure an adequate supply for operations.
· Coordinate with the relevant teams to ensure timely replenishment of stock.
Team Leadership:
· Provide leadership and training to the packing team, fostering a positive and productive work environment.
· Conduct performance reviews and provide feedback to team members.
· Work closely with the HR department on recruitment and HR processes, especially during peak seasons.
· Manage time corrections for the team using the Timepoint working time management system on weekly basis with strict payroll deadlines.
· Collaborate with the payroll department to ensure accurate and timely payroll processing, particularly during busy seasons with high seasonal staff turnover.
Cross-Department Collaboration:
· Work closely with the Quality Assurance, Finance, Goods In, Commercial, and Transport teams to ensure smooth operations and communication.
Reporting:
· Prepare and submit regular reports on packhouse operations, productivity, and maintenance activities to the Operations Manager and Finance.
Qualifications and Skills
Education:
Experience:
· Proven experience in a packhouse or production management role within the fresh produce or food industry.
· Strong knowledge of packing machinery maintenance and repair.
· Capable of running a fast-paced production facility
Skills:
· Excellent organizational and time management skills.
· Strong leadership and team management abilities.
· Skilled in people management, with experience managing large teams.
· Proficient in troubleshooting and problem-solving.
· Knowledge of health and safety regulations.
· Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
· Ability to work closely with HR and other departments on recruitment and HR compliance.
· Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in MS Excel and various reporting tools.
· Quick learner with the ability to adapt to new software applications.
· Familiarity with Timepoint or similar working time management systems is advantageous.
· Detail-oriented with a focus on quality and accuracy.

· Previous experience with Prophet an advantage

Working Conditions
This role is based in a fast-paced packhouse environment.
The Packhouse Manager may be required to work extended hours during peak seasons.
