Role Purpose

The Assistant Finance Manager is a qualified accountant responsible for managing the accuracy, integrity, and efficiency of group financial operations across the group and its subsidiaries. The role combines operational leadership with analytical and reporting responsibilities, including management of the accounts receivable function, ownership of month-end reporting for assigned entities, and contribution to budgeting and forecasting. Acting as deputy to the Finance Manager, the postholder will provide technical leadership, strengthen internal controls, and drive process improvements within Sage Intacct and related systems.

Key Responsibilities

Accounts Receivable and Credit Control

  • Lead the full accounts receivable cycle across The group and subsidiaries, including invoicing, receipts, allocation, and reconciliation within Sage Intacct.
  • Manage all direct debit and EFT processes for affiliation fees, SPS contributions, insurance premiums, and other recurring income.
  • Review and approve AR postings, batch journals, and recurring entries in Sage Intacct.
  • Oversee distribution of monthly debtor statements to credit unions, monitor aged debt reports, and manage escalation of overdue balances.
  • Ensure AR control accounts are fully reconciled to the general ledger each month.
  • Oversee daily bank reconciliations across all Group, Internal Audit Services and Foundation accounts (ROI and NI).
  • Authorise payment batches, intercompany transfers, and bank uploads via Bank of Ireland Business Online and Payment Plus, ensuring dual signatory controls are observed.
  • Approve and review monthly reconciliations of control accounts including VAT, accruals, prepayments, and intercompany balances.
  • Ensure all income and expenditure is accurately recorded and coded to the correct cost centre and fund.
  • Supervise compliance with VAT, payroll taxes, and corporation tax reporting timelines.
  • Coordinate month-end close, ensuring all journals, reconciliations, and intercompany adjustments are completed within agreed timelines.
  • Support the preparation of monthly management accounts, variance analysis, and supporting schedules for the Finance Manager and Head of Finance & Operations.
  • Support the preparation of financial statements and audit working papers for external review.
  • Provide financial insight to the Leadership Team on income trends, collection patterns, and working capital.
  • Maintain and enforce internal control processes as set out in the Finance Procedures Manual.
  • Review and update standard operating procedures to ensure alignment with Sage Intacct workflows.
  • Support the Finance Manager in implementing system automation, workflow approvals, and process improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with approval hierarchies
  • Liaise with auditors and external advisors to ensure compliance with audit and governance requirements.
  • Supervise and mentor the Accounts Assistant, providing training, guidance, and support.
  • Oversee the delivery of daily reconciliations, postings, and AR/AP routines.
  • Deputise for the Finance Manager in their absence, including payment authorisations and month-end sign-off.
  • Promote a collaborative, accountable, and service-oriented finance culture.
  • Perform any other duties or ad-hoc assignments as directed by the Finance Manager or Head of Finance and Internal Operations to support the overall objectives of the finance department.
  • Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent) with at least 3 years PQE.
  • Strong background in financial operations, AR management, and control environments.
  • Experience using Sage Intacct, or similar ERP system.
  • Strong Excel and data analysis skills.
  • Solid understanding of internal controls, reconciliations, and financial reporting frameworks.
  • Experience in a multi-entity or group accounting environment desirable.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent) with at least 3 years PQE.
  • Strong background in financial operations, AR management, and control environments.
  • Experience using Sage Intacct, or similar ERP system.
  • Strong Excel and data analysis skills.

  • Experience in a multi-entity or group accounting environment desirable.
